With more than 200 steps in the production process and a time frame of three weeks to finish a pair, shoemaking is a profession that only the seasoned and talented can sustain. A History of Craftsmanship
John Bert’s origins can be traced to Seri Kembangan, a town once renowned for the cottage industry of shoemaking in the Malaysian state of Selangor. Back in the 1960s, an enterprising youth named Chong Kont Fatt sold his first pair of shoes at the age of 17 upon completing an apprenticeship in shoemaking.
Two years later, he was running a fledgling shoe business with 15 workers under his charge. The year was 1969 and the John Bert Shoe Company, crafting its name from British fashion of the time, was born.
Today, Chong Kont Fatt’s grandson steers the family business forward with the same passion and dedication as his grandfather. John Bert presents a new era of contemporary design and style to customers worldwide through social media platforms in the digital economy while preserving the signature craftsmanship and quality forged by its founder half a century ago.
